Fall 2024 Sage Update

What's going on this fall with SCG's SAGE Program?

  • Students will be hosting a “Let it Rot! How to Make Compost Mini Workshop” for the community at the 11/9, 9-11 am Garden Workday. This is part of our Ocean Guardians School outreach.

  • Ms. Walker’s ELOP afterschool class has cut back the Sunflower Garden, and harvested the seeds for next spring’s re-planting of the circle. The Sunflower Garden was the 5th grade ‘23-’24 Legacy Project of Ms. Weller’s class.

  • Ms. Jade is facilitating and supporting Mr. Boyce’s class as they design and build compost sifters, beginning 11/6 as part of our OG grant project. These sifters will be used in the TLC garden, and will be designed with specific criteria in mind.

  • Ms. Currier has been taking her SDC preschool out into TLC garden regularly on Fridays to investigate garden phenomena.

  • We have three regular TLC Parent Volunteers on Fridays and two new TLC parent volunteers. We are so grateful for their support!

  • In addition to several great ongoing after school ELOP classes being offered this fall, several SCG teachers are now offering classes that are directly aligned to our SAGE Program values. Ms Walker’s Gardening Club is learning propagation and stewardship skills as they maintain the gardens around campus. Her club is  making custom seed packets with plants from around campus. Their seed packs are currently available in the office. Mr. Boyce’s Outdoor Adventure Club is deepening their relationship with nature by taking daily hikes on the Chaminade Trails while nature journaling, creating space for mindful moments, and learning the basics of birding, and plant identification. Mr. Eric's physical education and homework class creates the perfect balance of activity and learning. His goal is to create a supportive environment that fosters both physical health and academic success. They start the class with homework help where students receive personalized support in subjects they find challenging.  In our PE sessions, students will engage in a variety of sports and games designed to promote teamwork, fitness, and love for movement. Ms Julianne Wolf’s Morning Movement Class starts the day with movement to get the body and mind ready for learning! Classes consist of kid-friendly exercises such as yoga, dance cardio, and more. Mr. Billy Kessler’s Comic Book Club meets before school to dive into the exciting world of comics! In this class, students read popular comics or bring stories to life through drawing and coloring. This class was created for budding artists and storytellers and combines reading, art, and imagination for a fun, hands-on start to the day!

  • Four SCG teachers have begun their Teacher Leadership Institute of Sustainability (TLIS) projects with the COE. Projects include Ms. Kelly and Ms. Monica hosting an on-site recycled clothing exchange (first one to happen in December). Mr. Boyce will be creating Pollinator Data Collection Boxes in the spring to track pollination patterns and Ms. Jade will be supporting Ms. V’s class with building native bee boxes; these two projects are in support of watershed stewardship connection for our Ocean Guardian Schools Grant.

  • Fall TLC plantings include: radishes, fava beans, CA native bulbs and garlic.

  • In our Living Classroom weekly enrichment class, students have been studying compost and decomposition through investigating what rots, and how to make compost on site.

  • YBIOF (Your Future is Our Business) continues to support our monthly SAGE assemblies by having local organizations come speak. We had 3C Energy come for October. Next month is JOBY!

  • SCG has 2 new UCSC Environmental Education students gaining their class hours at SCG for the fall. Welcome Slugs!
