The wild fires in Los Angeles brought sadness and worry to the community of Santa Cruz Gardens. One third grade student at SCG, however, wanted to do something to help the victims of the fire.
When asked why she wanted to raise money, Ellie said “My mom had friends who were near the fire. The fire got close and kids had to leave their houses with just their backpacks. That made me feel bad. So I wanted to do something to help,” said Ellie A.

Ellie, a student in Tamara Riedel’s third grade class, decided to create a fundraiser for those affected by the Altadena fires. She shared this idea with her teacher and principal, who helped her create a plan. Ellie decided to host a yard sale and bake sale, with all proceeds going toward fire victims.
Ellie designed fliers and advertised her sale to the families of Santa Cruz Gardens and the Santa Cruz community. Students, teachers and members of the community donated clothes and household items. Others donated baked goods to sell at the bake sale.
On the day of the sale, many people from the school and neighborhood showed up and purchased items and baked goods. Ellie’s sale raised $2301, which was donated to Altadena Rotary. By Ellie’s request, the money will be donated to help people and their pets who lost homes in the fire.

Ellie’s idea is a wonderful example of the kindness and generosity we see each day at Santa Cruz Gardens, and serves as a reminder that everyone has the power to make an impact. Well done, Ellie!
